Portion Guide

Here is some information you may find useful when choosing the size of your cake.

A cake can be portioned in a 2'' x 1" slice or a 1" x 1" slice. Celebration cakes are usually 2" x 1" and wedding cakes 1" x 1", but for bigger parties you may prefer smaller 1' x 1" slices.

This guide assumes that there are three layers inside the cake, so numbers may reduce or enlarge depending on the number of layers inside. For instance, a two layer cake will still give the same number of portions but they will be shorter in height. A four layer cake can be cut in half again from top to bottom making two layers in each slice, doubling the amount of portions.

The diagram below shows the diameter of cake in the centre with the portions listed on either side

So for example a 3 layer 7" cake will yield approximately 15, 2" x 1" portions and 30, 1" x 1" portions. This is assuming the cake is cut into slices not wedges as below. If the cake is cut into wedges the portions will vary depending on the thickness of the slices cut.

So a three tier, three layer, 10" 8" and 6" wedding cake would yield approximately 120 finger portions.
